It was an interpretation of the blues that hadn"t been heard before, and it was much harder, more rocking, and definitely louder than anything else before it. As such, this new genre"s players were demanding more powerful amplifiers with increased volume outputs to satisfy their sonic explorations. This led to a call for a more versatile pickup that could split coils through a push/pull knob, and prevent microphonic feedback from occurring when the volumes were turned up to maximum levels. Gibson answered this call with the introduction of the revolutionary 490T and 490R pickups ( T for treble, and R for rhythm), which has the traditional characteristics of the original Patent Applied For pickups, but with two key modifications. First, a four-conductor wiring scheme allows the 490s to be connected to any push/pull knob, which lets players split the coils and increase versatility. Gibson also introduced wax potting, which does away with any air space, minimalizing microphonic feedback. The 490R is a humbucker with the tonal characteristics of an original PAF, with a slight increase in upper mid-range response. The 490T bridge pickup is calibrated to match the 490R, with pole pieces aligned a little further apart to accommodate the spacing of the strings at the bridge, which is different than the spacing of the strings at the neck. "50s Rounded Neck Profile No guitar neck profiles are more distinguishable than the neck profiles employed on the Gibson models of today. The more traditional "50s neck profile on the SG Special is the thicker, rounder profile, emulating the neck shapes found on the iconic 1958 and 1959 Les Paul Standards. The neck is machined in Gibso
Gibson SG Custom Vintage Original Spec Electric Guitar with Case
The Gibson Vintage Original Spec SG Custom: The SG Custom replaced the single cutaway Les Paul Custom in 1961. Now part of Gibson"s proprietary new Vintage Old Spec series " the next step in their journey toward perfection. Includes Custom Shop case. Custom Shop VOS Guitars Gibson has been producing solid body electric guitars for 55 years. Of course, the most famous of these guitars is the legendary Les Paul. In 2006 the Gibson Custom Shop released its Vintage Original Spec (VOS) series in honor of the instruments that have literally shaped the face of music today. The series consists of a 1956 Les Paul Gold Top; a "57 Les Paul Junior Singlecut; a "57 Gold Top in plain and darkback; "57 Customs in 2 and 3 pickup versions; "58 Junior Double Cut; "58 Plain Top; "59 Les Paul Sunburst reissue; "60 Les Paul Reissue; "60 Les Paul Specials in Single and Double Cut; an SG Standard Reissue; and an SG Custom 3 pickup Reissue. The production of these instruments is the culmination of 20 years of experience producing handmade Gibson Custom guitars. We primarily took on the challenge of re-creating the 3 most vital aspects of these legendary instruments: Look, Playability, and most of all Tone. In order to accurately reproduce the appearance of vintage Gibsons, the Custom Shop uses a combination of faithful adherence to our history and proprietary new processes and inventions. The hardware is left to soak in a special solution that transforms a brand new pick-up cover into a gently used historic jewel. The plastic and binding are painstakingly hand aged to provide that warm yellowed look that takes decades to occur in nature. Vintage accurate wood fillers, anodized dies and a 100% nitro-cellulose lacquer finishes are all expertly applied to create exacting reproductions of Gibson"s Gold Tops, Cherry"s, TV"s and, of course, famous Sunbursts. However, at a special point during the final buffing process, VOS guitars are treated to an application of Gibson"s secret and proprietary Magic Tone Oil . This oil is left to cure for a few days, and the result is that unmistakable lightly worn but still gorgeous appearance of a well cared for 50 year old guitar. In my humble opinion, however, it is in the remarkable playability of these instruments that we have really outdone ourselves. Each neck is literally hand rolled to replicate with amazing authenticity the 3 most notable neck profiles in Gibson history " the 50"s style, the "59, and the 1960 neck shape. The binding is also hand addressed to provide maximum comfort and playing surface. Finally, using another piece of technology for which Gibson has exclusivity for production instruments, the
Gibson Melody Maker Electric Guitar
The Gibson Melody Maker Electric Guitar; One of the most popular guitars in Gibson's history. An unbelievable value for players of all ages, styles and skill levels; the Melody Maker was originally introduced as a student model, much like the Les Paul Junior, the Melody Maker became a player's favorite for its light weight, comfortable neck, and great tone. Today's Melody Maker is a special tribute to the style of the 1959 edition of this beloved guitar. The Melody Maker is no exception to Gibson's quality guitar craftsmanship. With a period-correct pickguard housing a special design single-coil pickup, a vintage-style wraparound tailpiece, rounded 50s neck profile, and slim, light body. Gibson Melody Maker Features Slim, Solid Mahogany Body 50s Rounded Neck Profile with Set-Neck Construction 22-Fret Rosewood Fingerboard with Nickel and Silver Alloy Frets Gibson"s Special Design Singlecoil Pickup Compensated Wraparound Bridge/Tailpiece Angled Headstock Adjustable Truss Rod Dot Inlays Nitrocellulose Finish Slim, Solid Mahogany Body The most central of all the Melody Maker"s features is its slim, solid mahogany body. The mahogany goes through the same rigorous selection process as all of Gibson"s woods, and is personally inspected and qualified by Gibson"s team of skilled wood experts before it enters the factories. Inside the Gibson factories, humidity is maintained at 45 percent, and the temperature at 70 degrees. This ensures all woods are dried to a level of equilibrium , where the moisture content does not change during the manufacturing process. This guarantees tight-fitting joints and no expansion, and controls the shrinkage and warping of the woods, in addition to reducing the weight. It also improves the woods" machinability and finishing properties. Consistent moisture content means that a Melody Maker will respond evenly to temperature and humidity changes long after it leaves the factory. Gibson"s Special Design Singlecoil Pickup The legendary Melody Makers of the late 1950s and early 1960s were the best-selling models of Gibson"s famed Golden Era , and with good reason"they were lightweight, equipped with a comfortable neck, and capable of exceptional tone courtesy of Gibson"s own singlecoil pickup. Today"s Melody Maker sports a special-design singlecoil pickup that delivers that same vintage tone and performance. A stellar combination of high output and sweet treble response, this multi-ceramic magnet pickup provides plenty of punchy bite when needed, as well as incredible sustain and cutting power. Compensated Wraparound Bridge/Tailpiece A classic piece of hardware first used on the Les Paul Junior, the compensated wraparound bridge/tailpiece on the Melody Maker offers a simplicity and functionality that is hard to ma
