Shopping for an electric guitar…what should I look for?

Posted: January 7, 2009 – 12:18 pm

I've been playing the acoustic guitar for a long time now. I've never really gotten the chance to play an electric until the other day…I loved it! I don't have much money to spend (around $200 or $300…better if not over $200 though), so a Fender Standard Stratocaster Electric Guitar for $500 or a Gibson ES-339 30/60 Neck Semi-Hollow Electric for $2,000 is out of the question.

So, any suggestions?
What about something like this?

http://www.musiciansfriend.com/product/Epiphone-Les-Paul-Special-II-and-Amp-Pack?sku=513150

Absolutely agree - Epiphone is the way to go! Try before you buy as they can vary so much model to model. And it doesn't have to be new either- sometimes people want to sell and put the money towards their upgrade!
This is a make or break moment. You are essentially deciding if you are a Fender person or a Gibson person. Now there are circumstances, in the right hands for the right music- that a Fender is indeed sublime. But not in the right hands/circumstance/etc it has great potential to be awful. A Gibson on the other hand is your friend. Really bad guitar tones rarely come out of Gibsons :)

Should I get a white Fender Stratocaster worth 150$ or a black Ibanez with a value pack.?

Posted: January 5, 2009 – 10:56 am

I cant decide which one to get. I have never played guitar before and I dont really want to spend over 300$. Should I get a white fender stratocaster(like Hendrix played) for about 100 something dollars plus money for the amp and strap(no instructional video) or should I get this black Ibanez from Guitar center listed in the link below (It comes with a strap amp gig bag etc. and everything it comes with is listed on that link page) and the package is 250$:
http://www.guitarcenter.com/Ibanez-IJX40-Electric-Guitar-Jumpstart-Package-518876-i1168525.gc
And I want a classic rock sound to the guitar (Led Zeppelin AC/DC etc.) and the white stratocaster is single coiled and ive heard that humbuckers are better. The black ibanez I gave in the link has a humbucker and I have heard that the humbucker is good for a more classic rock sound.
Also keep in mind Im a starter and have never played before and I dont know too much about guitars like all the buttons on the amp and the buttons on the guitar and other thigns like that. Im not completely clueless about guitars though.
OR this Squire by fender in the link:

It doesn't really matter. The important thing is to stick with it. Either choice will be fine, but make sure you can locate a decent amp within your budget (I doubt the package has a great amp with it. Those things are tiny.)

If you can seriously buy a strat for $100, you should be good to go. You can pick up an amp for around $100 to $150, and spend the rest on misc.

However, look on the headstock and see where the strat was manufactured. If it is a Mexican strat, it's worth about $100. If it's a Japanese strat, it's worth about $200. If is says made in America, it's worth a lot more. You might end up making money on your first guitar purchase.

Will a fender starcaster guitar fit into a fender stratocaster case….? Please anwser! ?

Posted: January 3, 2009 – 8:48 am

I bought a shiny red Electric fender starcaster guitar this summer. I was thinking about buying it a hard case from fender…or some other brand. Will it fit in a stratocaster case…? Do you know any cases that it will fit in… I have been searching it for about a month, and i cant find any real info if it will or not. Please anwser.

Yes it will, as both guitars have the same measurement. Any strat case will work

Hope this helped :)

Epiphone Les Paul vs. Fender Stratocaster?

Posted: January 1, 2009 – 8:56 am

I play a Squire Telecaster (my first electric guitar), and I definitely think it's time for a new guitar. My main problems are the extremely high, slow action, the awful tone, the pickups (barely sense tapping and hammer-ons and pull-offs), and the tuning heads (barely stays in tune long enough for me to play a song).
When looking at possibilities for a new guitar, I've found that the Fender Stratocaster and the Epiphone Les Paul seem to be the highest quality guitars in my price range. In a new guitar, I'm looking for something that will give me:
1. An all-around great sound. Whether I'm playing clean or with heavy distortion, I want a nice tone.
2. Versatility. I'm mainly going to be playing hard rock/metal, but I want a guitar that can achieve a superior meta sound as well as softer tones/bluesy tones, etc.
3. Ease of play. It is preferable for the strings to be low to the fretboard and easy to bend/slide.
Between the two guitars, which fills the above specifications better?

The Fender Strat is definitely the better of those two. All the Epiphone Les Pauls that I have played feel like toys. They aren't too much better than the Squier Strats. If you were talking about a Gibson Les Paul, it would be a closer match.

The truth is, the metal tone is easy to get with the right amplifiers. However, to get a good dynamic bluesy tone a Fender Strat will definitely lend more to your style than an Epiphone. Reasons why:

The scale length is longer, meaning more tension in the strings and therefore more energy in the bends and intensity in the lower notes.

The wood and body are lighter, and made of woods that lend more of a deep, bluesy sound.

They have five different pickup selection positions and two tone knobs, which lend great variety to the possible tones you can achieve. for comparison, an Epiphone only has three pickup positions.

In general, Fender makes higher quality instruments than Epiphone. Epiphone is to Gibson what Squier is to Fender- a lesser company that makes all their beginner instruments at cheaper prices.

What’s the difference between Fender Stratocaster and Fender Starcaster?

Posted: December 30, 2008 – 9:56 am

I’m going to buy a electric guitar and i’m a beginner but i’m sure that i’m going to keep learning it.
when i searched a guitar at the amazon.com there are 2 types of guitars above. because my friend said Fender Stratocaster is good, i’m going to buy it but what’s the difference between stratocaster and starcaster? also, there were a lot of choices in Stratocaster, so, what should i pick? i think i can get the guitar about $300 or less. tell me the difference between stratocaster and starcaster, and give me some explanation about all the choices from Fender Startocaster.

Well, There was one pretty good answer there. The STARCASTER was originally a semi hollow body electric.

However, These days Fender IS making a Starcaster guitar that is basically the same as a Squier Strat.
I've seen them for sale at Target and at Costco. I'd stay away from the Starcaster though. I checked one out and the action and neck quality was substandard, even for a cheap guitar.

A Squier strat is fine for a beginning player . I'd suggest the Affinity series instead of the slightly cheaper Squier. The Affinity series strat runs only about $150 by itself and you can get either maple or rosewood fingerboards. They are made for Fender in china. If you get one that was made OK, with the right adjustments, they play almost as well as the more expensive Stratocaster.

Now if you're talking Fender Stratocaster, there are about 5 or 6 editions. going up from $300 or so for a Mexican made one, up to $1000 for the American Deluxe Strat. In between are like The American Strat, the American Standard Strat, Each version runs about $200 dollars more as you go up. They offer different pickup materials and the deluxe strat has a bunch of adjustments to the neck you can do besides the truss rod.

If you can afford $300 bucks, though, The Mexican made Fender Strat would be the best one for your price range.

But like the one guy said, it you can, buy one from a real music store that you can play before you buy, because every guitar has it's own personality. I've played crappy expensive guitars and good cheap ones at the guitar store.
So go with how it feels for you.
If you do buy it online, take it to a music store and get the action, tremolo and intonation set by a technician, so it plays as well as it can.

Should I get a white Fender Stratocaster worth 100-150$ or a black Ibanez with a value pack or a squire fender

I dont want to get a guitar that is too hard to play on because once again I have never played before and Im just going to start learning. So I dont really want a guitar if its too hard to play on for a starter.

i dont know whats wrong with you. first off, there is no such thing as a guitar under $150- all guitars under $300 are just plastic and strings and they should be disposed of using fire and holy water. i keep telling people, it doesnt matter if you are a beginner- being a beginner is no excuse for being cheap!!! why would u buy an $150 guitar or even consider it. and i dont get what u said with a guitar thats "too hard to play because im a beginner" if anything, a more expensive guitar is WAY easier to play than a guitar that comes in a box. there is a difference when i play a squier strat from an assembly line, and a custom ordered fender jaguar. ANYWAYS, squier strats are terrible and should be played by small children because they tend to break things. dont get the ibanez they suck. the last time i checked, ac/dc and led zeppelin didnt play budget guitars. if i were u i would save up and buy a nice strat, but first find a guitar store that specializes in guitars and find a strat there that is over $300. go for a $450 strat. you can find a nice american strat for $450 that is white and closer to what hendrix played because im pretty sure hendrix didnt play crap fenders. its better to start of on a nice guitar than a piece of plastic. i made the mistake of buying a squier strat- bad mistake. i was ripped when i bought it for $150 and sold it to a guitar store for $80. i dont think there is any reason a beginner should only spend a certain amount of money, probably because they think they might quit. if you make a commitment and buy something, dont quit out on it- girls dont like quitters.
